Fit
The Base Pace has a streamlined, minimal fit that mirrors the Fast and Free through the leg but simplifies everything above the waist. The high-rise waistband includes an interior drawcord for adjustment but lacks the pocket system that makes the Fast and Free a runner’s utility belt. The fit is close without being compressive, following the body’s contour from hip to ankle.
The absence of pockets means there are no seam interruptions along the thigh, resulting in a cleaner, smoother silhouette. If you run with an armband or running vest for your phone, the pocketless design is actually a benefit — nothing to bounce or create asymmetry.
Fabric & Feel
This is Nulux — identical to the Fast and Free. The 71/29 nylon-Lycra blend is the lightest, most invisible fabric lululemon makes. It’s slick, cool, and so thin that it barely registers on the skin during movement. Sweat evaporates rapidly from the surface, and the fabric resists the heavy, saturated feeling that plagues thicker training tights on hot days.
The same opacity caveat applies: lighter colors in Nulux can become sheer during deep bends. Darker colorways are the safer choice for outdoor running in daylight.
Durability
Nulux durability is moderate. The Base Pace will last 12–18 months of regular running before the inner thighs show wear. The simplified construction (fewer seams, no pocket reinforcements) means fewer stress points, which may give it a slight edge over the Fast and Free in pure longevity. Cold wash and hang dry to maximize lifespan.
Value
At $98, the Base Pace matches the Align and Wunder Train as lululemon’s most accessible tight price point. It’s $30 less than the Fast and Free for the same Nulux fabric — the savings come entirely from removing pockets. For runners who don’t carry a phone during runs, this is the better value proposition.
Who It’s For
Minimalist runners who want the lightest possible fabric without paying for pockets they don’t need. If you run with a vest, belt, or armband for your phone, the Base Pace gives you Fast and Free fabric at Align pricing. If you need pockets, spend the extra $30 on the Fast and Free.
