“Butter-soft” became the most used — and most abused — descriptor in activewear marketing. Every legging brand claims it. Very few earn it.
The actual butter-soft experience is specific: a lightweight, silky fabric that moves with the skin without feeling heavy, structured, or compressive. It wears like a second skin. The first time you experience it, you understand why people spend $98 on leggings.
These five are the genuine article.
What Makes a Legging “Butter Soft”?
The texture comes down to three factors:
Fabric composition: Nylon-dominant blends with high spandex content (19-25%) create the silky, stretchy hand-feel. Polyester-based fabrics feel noticeably coarser by comparison.
Fabric weight: Lighter fabrics (lighter grams per square meter) feel more weightless against the skin. This is also why they’re more prone to pilling — less material means less friction resistance.
Finish: Some fabrics receive a brushed or treated finish that enhances the soft texture. Lululemon’s Nulu uses proprietary finishing; CRZ YOGA’s Butterluxe uses a similar approach.
What butter-soft leggings are NOT for: High-impact workouts, running, heavy squatting. The delicate fabric and minimal compression make them the wrong tool for gym performance. For those use cases, see our Best Squat Proof Leggings guide.
